Ash Glaze Mini Vase by Janet Leach

£750.00

A small stoneware vase of compact, rounded form with a short neck and subtly flared rim. Small applied lug handles sit at the shoulder, while a thick ash glaze covers the surface, breaking into tones of olive, ochre and iron brown. Variations in the glaze and firing retain a pronounced surface texture throughout. Impressed with the St Ives and artist’s marks, the work reflects Janet Leach’s materially focused approach to studio pottery. Janet Leach (1918–1997) was an American-born British studio potter. Initially trained as a sculptor in New York, she travelled to Japan in the early 1950s, studying under Shoji Hamada and Tatsuzo Shimaoka. In 1956 she moved to St Ives and later became associated with the Leach Pottery, where she worked alongside Bernard Leach. Her work is recognised for its direct handling of form and surface within the context of post-war British studio ceramics. Origin: British Period/Style: British Studio Ceramics Material: Stoneware with ash glaze Dimensions: 11.5cm height × 8.5cm width × 7cm depth
