A small bronze sculpture by Breon O’Casey (1928–2011), capturing the poised simplicity and abstract grace for which his work is known.
Emerging from the middle generation of St Ives painters like William Scott, Peter Lanyon, and Patrick Heron, O’Casey’s wide-ranging practice included painting, printmaking, weaving, jewellery, and sculpture. He moved to St Ives in 1959, initially assisting Denis Mitchell and later Barbara Hepworth, who taught him the fundamentals of working in three dimensions.
Evoking the elegance of Cycladic and Ancient Egyptian artefacts, this bird form is streamlined and tactile, its gently abstracted contours allowing the natural materiality of the bronze to speak. Characteristic of O’Casey’s sculptural work, it strikes a balance between monumentality and intimacy in miniature scale.
