A stoneware vase of elongated form rising from a rounded body into a narrow neck with a gently flared rim. Applied cylindrical lug handles sit at the shoulder, while the pale grey ash glaze is overlaid with cross-hatched iron oxide decoration worked across the front and reverse.
Impressed with the St Ives and artist’s marks, the work reflects Janet Leach’s materially focused approach to studio pottery.
Janet Leach (1918–1997) was an American-born British studio potter. Initially trained as a sculptor in New York, she travelled to Japan in the early 1950s, studying under Shoji Hamada and Tatsuzo Shimaoka. In 1956 she moved to St Ives and later became associated with the Leach Pottery, where she worked alongside Bernard Leach. Her work is recognised for its direct handling of form and surface within the context of post-war British studio ceramics.
