Rachel Nicholson (1934–2026) was a British artist known for her still-life and landscape paintings. One of triplets born to artists Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth, she began painting in her early forties and developed a distinctive practice characterised by carefully structured compositions and a considered approach to colour and form.
Green and Blue Striped Mug with Spoon is a later work in gouache, continuing Nicholson’s longstanding interest in still-life subjects. The composition centres on a striped mug and spoon, using simplified forms and a restrained palette to explore relationships between colour, shape and space. The work is signed, initialled, inscribed and dated.
Nicholson’s practice developed within the context of modern British painting while retaining a distinct approach to still life and landscape. Her work is represented in public and private collections.
