Maria Borges of Goa by Cassi Namoda
Painted in 2019, Maria Borges of Goa is a poignant work by Mozambican-American artist Cassi Namoda (b. 1988), whose practice explores emotional and historical narratives in a postcolonial world. This composition, titled and signed on the reverse, was acquired from François Ghebaly Gallery, Los Angeles, shortly after its creation and later featured in a Bonhams auction.
Namoda refers to her work as “cinematic,” intertwining storytelling and visual language to convey nuanced interior lives and collective memory. In this painting, she draws inspiration from Transforming Mozambique: The Politics of Privatization, 1975–2000 by M. Anne Pitcher. The titular Maria Borges is, as Namoda describes, “a metaphor that I’ve continued to explore” — a figure shaped by stoicism, strength, heartbreak, and resilience.
Born in Mozambique and raised between East Africa and the United States, Namoda has exhibited internationally with institutions including the Norval Foundation (Cape Town), Studio Museum (New York), Pérez Art Museum (Miami), MACAAL (Marrakech), and Mendes Wood DM (São Paulo). She participated in the 16th Sharjah Biennial and is widely recognised for her contribution to contemporary African diasporic art.
