Peter Lanyon (1918–1964) was a British painter and sculptor and a central figure in post-war St Ives. Born in St Ives, Cornwall, his work was closely informed by the surrounding landscape and coastline, which he increasingly translated into abstraction. During the later years of his career, his experience of gliding introduced an aerial perspective into his work and further developed his exploration of movement, space and landscape.
