Oval Star Face Plate by Charlotte Salt
A hand-built decorative plate by Yorkshire-based ceramicist Charlotte Salt, made in buff stoneware and finished with layered glazes and oxides.
Charlotte Salt’s face plates are charged with symbolic presence. Their stylised forms and expressive detailing recall sun and moon deities, filtered through a visual language that draws on mysticism, mythology, and early forms of decorative art. Each piece is sculptural in its own right, radiating tactility and character.
Salt’s influences range from William Blake’s visionary drawings and John Milton’s verse to Picasso’s ceramics and the rich patterning of early tapestries. These references are embedded into the surface of her work through coiling, slab-building, modelling, and pinching — processes that expose the rhythms of making.
Based in North Yorkshire, Salt works from her home studio and AHH Studio Collective. Her background, raised in her parents’ pottery studio, informs a deeply intuitive relationship with clay and an appreciation for hand-built imperfection. Every brushstroke, mark and imprint is left visible, retaining a sense of spontaneity and raw expression.
