A Regency whitewood sewing box modelled as a country cottage and dated 1809. The exterior is painted with leaded windows, a stable door, trees and foliage, and a female figure standing at the entrance.
The pitched roof opens to reveal a pink paper-lined interior, originally divided to hold threads, needles and other sewing implements. Cottage-form boxes of this type belong to the early tradition of painted whitewood wares, preceding the marquetry decoration associated with later Tunbridge Ware.
The base bears a handwritten dedication in pencil: ‘From M… to L.H.N. August 16th 1809’, suggesting the box was originally presented as a personal gift.
