Alfred Wallis (1855–1942) was a self-taught British artist who began painting in his seventies, following a working life largely spent at sea and in the fishing communities of Cornwall. Working primarily on found pieces of card and board, he developed a distinctive approach to scale and perspective. His work became an important influence on artists associated with the emerging St Ives modernist movement, particularly Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood.
