Stoneware Bottle Vase by David Leach for Lowerdown Pottery

£1,800.00

A tall stoneware bottle vase by British potter David Leach, decorated in tenmoku and kaki glazes with wax-resist motifs and bearing the incised DL mark. Thrown and fired at Lowerdown Pottery, Devon, the piece reflects Leach’s precise approach to form and surface.

David Leach (1911–2005), the elder son of Bernard Leach, was a leading figure in twentieth-century British studio ceramics. Born in Tokyo, he trained at the Leach Pottery and later at the North Staffordshire Technical College. During the 1930s and 1940s, he was instrumental in modernising production at St Ives. In 1955 he established Lowerdown Pottery, where he developed a distinct body of work characterised by balance, refinement and technical clarity.

This vase exemplifies the restrained aesthetic associated with Leach’s mature practice, combining a controlled silhouette with subtle glaze transitions and carefully executed decoration.
