Super Blue Table Light by Martine Bedin for Memphis Milano, 1981
An emblem of postmodern design, the Super lamp was created in 1981 by French designer and architect Martine Bedin for the groundbreaking Memphis Group. Intended for use as both a table and floor lamp, it features a semicircular fibreglass body mounted on four rubber wheels, with a playful arc of exposed bulbs rising like a crown from the frame. Sculptural and functional, it remains one of the most iconic objects of the Memphis movement.
This example is an early first edition and is in excellent condition. The lamp is part of several major museum collections worldwide, including the V&A and Vitra Design Museum, and is widely recognised for its joyful irreverence and bold materiality.
Martine Bedin (b. 1957, Bordeaux) was a founding member of the Memphis Group. Trained as an architect, she has worked across disciplines as an industrial designer, professor, and theorist. Her work continues to be exhibited internationally and is held in numerous public and private collections.
The Memphis movement, founded in Milan in 1981 by Ettore Sottsass and a collective of young architects and designers, radically shifted the cultural landscape of design. Characterised by vibrant colours, graphic patterns, and unexpected forms, Memphis rejected functionalist restraint in favour of emotional expression and visual impact. Its influence remains palpable across contemporary design, fashion, and architecture.
