The Island, Porthmeor by Bryan Pearce

£4,500.00

Bryan Pearce (1929–2007) was a British artist born in St Ives, Cornwall, known for his highly individual depictions of the town’s architecture, coastline and daily life. Created in 1993, The Island, Porthmeor presents a stylised view of the St Ives headland and beach, rendered in flattened perspective and simplified forms. The curve of the beach and the clustered buildings are outlined with sparing ink and accented with pastel, while birds appear scattered across the sky in quiet motion. Pearce was diagnosed with phenylketonuria (PKU), a rare metabolic condition, and began painting as a therapeutic practice in the 1950s. He studied at the St Ives School of Painting from 1953 to 1957 and remained closely tied to the town’s modernist artistic community throughout his life. His work is held in public collections including Tate, Kettle’s Yard, and the Arts Council Collection. Origin: British Period/Style: 20th Century / St Ives Date: 1993 Medium: Ink and pastel on paper Dimensions: 39cm height × 46.5cm width (framed)
