An oil on canvas laid to board abstract composition dating from Arthur Jackson Hepworth’s formative early period. The work reflects the influence of British modernism in the 1930s, with an emphasis on structure, abstraction and simplified form. Arthur Jackson Hepworth (1911–2003), who worked under the name Arthur Jackson for his painting practice, was a British abstract painter working principally in oil, watercolour and scraperboard. He studied at St Martin’s School of Art and was a pupil of Ben Nicholson between 1931 and 1935, placing him within an important circle of early modern British artists that included Barbara Hepworth and John Skeaping. His work formed part of the wider development of abstraction in Britain during the interwar years. This painting was rediscovered in 2011, having previously been one of a group of early works whose whereabouts had been unknown.
