Breon O’Casey

Breon O’Casey (1928–2011) was a British painter, sculptor, jeweller and silversmith whose work balanced modernist abstraction with a strong sense of craftsmanship. Born in London to playwright Seán O’Casey and actor Eileen Reynolds, he was raised in Devon and educated at Dartington Hall, where Bauhaus-trained artist Naum Slutzky shaped his early understanding of form, material and design.

After completing National Service and further study in London, O’Casey settled in St Ives, drawn by its creative freedom and strong artistic community. He worked with Denis Mitchell on commissions for Barbara Hepworth before establishing his own independent practice.

Working across painting, metalwork and jewellery, O’Casey developed a distinctive visual language that combined bold, abstract forms with a tactile, handmade quality. His pieces reflect a deep respect for traditional craft alongside a playful, experimental approach to modernism.

Recognition grew gradually through solo and group exhibitions in the UK and Ireland, and it wasn’t until his seventies that he devoted himself fully to his art. Today, his work is held in major collections including the Hermitage Museum, Kettle’s Yard, the V&A; and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Bronze Bird by Breon O’Casey
£0.00

A small bronze sculpture by Breon O’Casey (1928–2011), capturing the poised simplicity and abstract grace for which his work is known. Emerging from the middle generation of St Ives painters like William Scott, Peter Lanyon, and Patrick Heron, O’Casey’s wide-ranging practice included painting, printmaking, weaving, jewellery, and sculpture. He moved to St Ives in 1959, initially assisting Denis Mitchell and later Barbara Hepworth, who taught him the fundamentals of working in three dimensions. Evoking the elegance of Cycladic and Ancient Egyptian artefacts, this bird form is streamlined and tactile, its gently abstracted contours allowing the natural materiality of the bronze to speak. Characteristic of O’Casey’s sculptural work, it strikes a balance between monumentality and intimacy in miniature scale. Origin: British Date: 20th Century Material: Bronze Dimensions: 9.5cm height × 21cm length × 6.5cm depth
